Ames 12' PWT Test Overview
The Trap Wing model was tested in the Ames 12' PWT for ten single-shift
weeks during the Spring of 1999. Installation in the test section
began on March 15th, and the first air was blown over the model on March
26th. The test was completed (including model removal) on May 21st.
A total of 536 runs were recorded during the test - 291 for the fullspan
flap configuration, and 245 for the part span flap configuration.
Several measurement and visualization techniques were employed during the
test to provide the CFD community with not only force and pressure data,
but transition, boundary layer, wake deficit, and separation data as well.
Below is a summary of the various techniques (clicking on link will provide
more detailed information):
Measurement or visualization method | Symbol | Description |
Force and moment data | FP | Semispan floor balance: NF-40k lb, AF-8k lb, PM-20k ft-lb, RM-200k ft-lb, YM-40k ft-lb |
Model pressures | FP | Approximately 900 pressures on slat, main element, flap, and body pod. Additional pressure data from test section walls, image plane, and wall-mounted pressure rails also obtained |
Temperature sensitive paint | TSP | For transition detection on the slat upper surface and forward portions of the upper surface of the main element and flap |
Minitufts | MT | For determining stall progression (separation). 0.0025" dia. fluorescent polyester monofilament material applied to flap and aft portion of main element. |
7-hole probe | 7HP | Model-mounted traverser system for boundary layer and wake-deficit measurements at several upper-surface locations on the model. |
The key force and pressure (FP), minituft (MT), and temperature sensitive
paint (TSP) runs were conducted at Mach = 0.15 for Reynolds numbers (RN)
ranging from 3.5 million to 15 million. Below are tables describing
the configurations that were tested and the Re values at which data were
obtained.
